Bagels, With a Southern Twist

After more than two decades in the bagel business, Dennis Pariti, 53, of Levittown, decided to add barbecue to the menu. So last May he put a hickory-burning smoker in the kitchen of the Garden City Park deli he has owned for six years and rechristened it Bagels and BBQ.
“I thought it would be a crazy mix, but I know my neighborhood,” Mr. Pariti said. Before long, he was serving St. Louis and baby back ribs ($17.99 a rack) and 14-hour slow-cooked chopped brisket sandwiches ($7.99).
Stephanie Krieger, 47, of New Hyde Park, who was there on a recent afternoon, said she stops in weekly for the tangy pulled pork ($7.99 for a sandwich). “I’m from Tennessee, and it matches some of the best barbecue from down there,” Ms. Krieger said.
Mr. Pariti and his brother, Anthony Pariti, 64, who lives in Pennsylvania, once owned a chain of bagel stores on Long Island, but they sold them in 2004. Dennis Pariti is now the sole proprietor of Bagels and BBQ and brings in 26 flavors of traditional water-boiled bagels from the bagel factory that he owns in New Hyde Park (80 cents each; $9.60 a dozen).
The menu at the order-at-the-counter, 42-seat deli includes 16 kinds of cream cheese. (Lox cream cheese on a bagel is $2.90). There are also panini ($6.75), quesadillas ($6.45), burgers ($4.75 to $7.25), wraps (most at $5.95), salads ($3.75 to $6.75) and daily specials like corned beef and cabbage ($6.50) and Swedish meatballs ($6).
“We’re the melting pot of the neighborhood,” Mr. Pariti said.
