Under the Head Coaching of Ray Hanley Jr. and Chris Hughes, the Wantagh Warriors ( Middle School ) improved to 3-0 with a victory over Hicksville, 59-9. So far, the squad has defeated Seaford and Bethpage this season. The next match is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 4:30 P.M., at the Merrick Avenue, Middle School. Wantagh has been undefeated for the last year and a half. I will post a team list when I get it. The referee from the match was quoted as saying that Wantagh had a great knowledge of the moves and was very prepared. You all deserve alot of credit for wrestling so hard. Great JOB…

In Kiddie News: The Warriors sent a number of wrestlers to the USA NYS Championships in Union Endicott, New York. This is a two day event. On the 1st date the following wrestlers participated: Kyle Mosher ( 6th place, ) Tommy Rohan ( just missed placing ), Kyle McCarthy ( 5th place ) Joe Conklin ( just missed placing ), Jonathan Loew ( 1st place ) Timmy Grief ( wrestled well ) John John DeRidder ( wrestled great ).

Kyle Quinn placed 2nd in NYS while Jose Rodriguez took a gold medal and finished first. WOW. WOW. WOW. Great Job..

You should all be very proud. It takes a lot of courage to wrestle in these events. The Parents are all wonderful for making the trips, paying the entry fees, getting a hotel and staying at the gym all day. THANK YOU.

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THAT 3 STYLE REGISTRATION IS MONDAY NIGHT AT 6:00 P.M. ANYONE GOING TO BRENTWOOD PRACTICE, LET ME KNOW BUT YOU STILL NEED TO REGISTER FOR THE CLUB.

The 3 Style Club will be having sign ups this Monday, March 8, 2010, starting at 6:00 P.M. at the Wantagh Middle School Gym. Please get the word out. This club is for the little wrestler all the way up to the advanced one. The cost is low. Our coaches are running this. We will have College Wrestlers as well as guests being brought in to run practice. We use this money to pay the college coaches. It is very important that everyone on our team sign up. If you play another sport, that is fine but the practices are at 7:30 P.M. If you can get here and work-out, you will be prepared for next year. Trust me. The key to success is off season workouts. 2 practices at night will not hurt.

The Middle School Team is now 2-0 after defeating Seaford 36 to 33 last week and Bethpage 75-24. Great job by Coach Hanley and Hughes. The team has been undefeated for the last year in a half. Next match is Saturday at Hicksville at 10:00 A.M. Go Warriors. Everyone on this team should sign up Monday evening for the 3 Style Club.

Nationals:

For anyone that is interested. The High School Nationals are March 23, 2010 in Virginia Beach. It is a six hour car ride. The Tournament is formatted to have kids only wrestle their own grade level. It is alot of fun and Wantagh has done very well in the past. If you want to go, you need to register and make a hotel reservation. I can tell you that numerous kids on the 2010 team are planning on going. Practices are starting this Monday at Brentwood HS at 4:30 P.M. We will be car pooling to practice after school. You can workout out with other Nassau / Suffolk Wrestlers. Remember, 9th grade only wrestles a 9th grader. Be warned: you must work out hard for this competition. Starting Monday there is practice 5 days a week to get ready. For additional information: www:nhsca.com

I already have a hotel reservation and will provide additional information. I strongly suggest that everyone attend this event. It is great wrestling, nice venue, good weather, with nothing to lose.

Even if you attend the Brentwood practices, someone should be signing you up for the 3 Style Club on Monday evening. Support Wantagh Wrestling.

The Wantagh Warriors finished 3rd in New York State in their attempt to repeat as State Champions. Wantagh had three second place finishes and secured a few points with another win. Rocky Point had three champions at 140, 160 and 171 and took 1st while Huntington finished second with two champions and one second place finish at 112, 119 and 160. Nassau County finished second as a section behind Suffolk County and did a great job. Thank you to all our coaches.

Joe Barbato capped off a remarkable tournament after winning his 1st bout and setting up a match vs Mike Soria of Kings Park who was the defending State Champion. Joe won a great match to advance. In his third bout, Joe defeated his close friend, Chris Brienza of St. Anthony’s who placed third last year pushing him into the finals. Joe fell a little short and placed second to Dierna of Wayne HS. A great job..

Nick Fitzmaurice wrestled with a lot of courage. As everyone knows, Nick sustained a very tough and painful injury a few weeks ago and has been treating the injury. Nick had a very tough draw. After winning his first bout, Nick wrestled Wade of Islip HS and lost a hard match. Nick wrestled back and lost another bout. I really don’t know too many kids that could have competed with this injury. Nick made the states two years in a row and will be competiting at Binghamton next year.

Joe Kavanagh: This is another true Warrior. Joe has been fighting off a painful injury in his lower back. Joe has been treating and was told to rest. Joe had a great tournament reaching the finals and losing 3-2 to Senior, Billy Coggins of Rocky Point. Joe has more mountains to climb and in my opinion has more raw ability that anyone I know. The rest is up to him.

Matt Loew: Matt wrestled a good tournament and fell short in the finals losing 9-3. I know that Matt gave it everything he could and fell short. As a parent, I am proud of my child for how much he gave. Matt put in his time, sweat and gave up many things along the way. I am sad as one chapter of this book is closing. Tommorrow a new one will be written. Matt is leaving for Colorado Springs to spend some time training and living with the Olympic team. Matt choose this path and wants to continue training and getting better for his future.

I would like to thank all our friends, parents, teachers, Coaches and team members. The message is: don’t be scared of losing. This is a challenge and you must prepare just like school. There can be no regrets if you did everything you could. It has been a great six year run. Lets start getting ready for next year. Go Warriors.

E-Mail:

Fantastic year! Over the past 3 years, you guys have finished 2,1,2 in the Counties and 2,1,3 at States. You have won 12 State Medals with 9 finalists: 5 titles, 4 runners-up, 2 thirds and 1 fifth!!!! You have had two 2X state champs, two times with two state champs, this year with three finalists, a 4X all-state placer and sent three wrestlers to D1 programs….so far….with two more going next year. Accomplishments like that are rare and everyone should be very proud of the effort and sacrifice it takes. Years down the road, the hard work you all put in will bear much fruit. Congratulations. I am so proud of all of you. John Henning ‘69

171: Joseph Kavanagh has the number 2 seed and opens vs Troy Benjamin, Mexico HS, section 3 ( Joe has wrestled Troy 2 times and won ). If Joe advances he will wrestle Chad Obzud, Lansinburg, section 2 or Sean Prell, Warwick HS, section 9.

189: Matt Loew opens against Adam Malone, Massena HS section 10. If Matt wins he faces either Paul Alessandrini, St. Anthony’s HS, or Jake Smith, Smithtown HS, section 11. On a good note, Matt has wrestled both opponents and defeated them in the past. Hopefully this is a good advantage.

THE WRESTLER – THE CHAMPION

No one is born a champion. Every champion must pay the price, and the price is never small. It is the investment in one’s future that builds the inner strength of the champion. The investment of time, sweat, effort, sore muscles, bruised egos, frustration, more sweat, exhaustion and at sometimes even tears. While others sit idle and enjoy short-term pleasures, the champion is hard at work, focused on the future.

Wrestling has many champions. They are not just the first place winners, for it is not the victory that makes the champion – it is the investment. The greater the investment, the greater the champion.

Wrestling is the sport of champions.

It would be safe to say we are not in the running for first but it appears we can secure a second or third place finish. That is amazing to me with so many young wrestlers getting the chance to represent the black and gold. I know each and every Wantagh Wrestler will make the effort to outwork the other teams for next year. That effort comes from inside each wrestler to work hard with practice and do well in school. This opens the doors for college…

Nick Fitzmaurice: In the finals
All the teams are separated by six points. The Warriors have six wrestlers in the semi finals which include:
Joe Barbato, Danny McDevitt, Paul Friscia, Nick Fitzmaurice, Joe Kavanagh and Matt Loew. Thomas Hall and Patrick Connolly both have secured All County place finishes and still have a chance to go for 3rd place. Syosett has seven semi final wrestlers still alive. It will come down to who wants this more. I think the other teams will fade as we go further along. Can Wantagh punch through some CHAMPIONS ?? No matter what, we are giving our best effort. Win or lose.. It is great to be in position to win like the Yankees. Thanks to all our coaches, parents, supporters and fans. It has been a great year with lots of laughs, kisses, curses, disagreements, etc. I love it. LMAO….

Update: The following boys wrestled in the Counties: Joe Barbato, Gary Sidoti ( 1 and 1 ), Alex Kaufmann, Danny McDevitt, Kenny Albert, Vinny Turano, Chris Araoz ( 1 match away from placing ) Patrick Connolly, Anthony Bartilucci, Paul Friscia, Chris Loew ( 1 and 1 ), James Corbett ( 1st he was out, then in, out and finally in ) Sean Tomlinson, Joseph Kavanagh, Matt Loew, Thomas Hall and Stephen English. Great Job. The entire team gets a job well done for all the hard work and support.
