THE TOP FOUR WRESTLERS FROM EACH WEIGHT ADVANCE TO THE NEXT ROUND WHICH IS THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11 AND SUNDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2012 AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY. The baby Warriors finished with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses in the Blue Wave Dual Meet Tournament held at John Glenn High School. Each team entered wrestled a high school format and rotated against each team. Wantagh lost their first match against a very talented South Plainfield Team before losing to Rocky Point in the second match. Wantagh reeled off three matches in a row defeating Massapequa, Hauppauge and Silverback which is a team from Connecticut. Great job..

Thanks for the hard work of Maureen Conklin, Kelly Rohan, Ray Hanley, Will ( I don’t know your last name but thanks for helping all of our little guys ) and Eddie DeRidder for making this event a great success. Maureen Conklin and Kelly Rohan were also the driving force in the kitchen at our recent youth wrestling tournament. Thank you. For those of you that do not know, the youth wrestlers work out all year and will be off the charts as soon as next year when they take the step up to the Varsity. WANTAGH WINS 2012 DUAL MEET CHAMPIONSHIP

Wow what a finish… Wantagh faced off against the MacArthur Generals their cross highway friends in a thrilling semi- final finish that saw the Warriors losing 22 to 18 going into the 170 match as Chris Loew pinned his opponent followed by wins by Sean Tomlinson wrestling up at 220 lbs. and a cluth pin by Senior C0-Captain Steve English to seal the win and send the team into the finals where the won against the Long Beach Marines 42 to 18. I must say that MacArthur is a very good team that has many outstanding young wrestlers. It was a great match that had more than a few fans getting their heart rate and pulse up as well as a heavy sweat to say the least. Wantagh finishes the season un-defeated at 22-0… A first in their history. Here is the re-cap:

WARRIORS DEFEAT LOCUST VALLEY AND FREEPORT IN DUAL MEET PLAYOFFS

The Warriors started off the 2011-2012 Nassau County Dual Meet Team Championship in good fashion wrestling at home and defeating Locust Valley for the second time in a week by a score of 63 to 12 and the Freeport Devils 57 to 17. Last year the team was upset in the finals by a very good Massapequa team but Wantagh came back to win the County Championship for the second time in three years. I believe Wantagh has won a total of four County Championships in their history. Next up: The Semi-Finals against the MacArthur Generals at Clark High School at 11:00 A.M.

On the 7th annual Joe Marcino alumni night the Warriors defeated Brooklyn Tech High School, PSAL by a score of 60 to 15. The team was honored to greet former wrestlers introduced by Mr. Bill Bogatz, announcer and Economics teacher at Wantagh High School. The following past Champions were present: Anthony Bartilucci 2010, Daniel Schreiber 2009, Joseph Pozzi 2007, Charlie Mignoli 2007, Kevin Jansen 2006, Matt Pellicane 2005, Steve Nistro 2005, Al Iaguinta 2005, Robert Lavrie 2003, Ray Hanley Jr, 2003, Ryan Demeri 2003, Derek Russo 2002, Mike Thompson 2001, Justin McCory 2001, Jason Layton 2001, Joshua Kanowitz 2001, Todd Bloom ( Head Coach of Brooklyn Tech and a great supporter of the Warriors ), Troy Russo 1991, Nick Codignotto 1988, Tom Codignotto 1983, ( The Codignotto family donated a check in the amount of $1,100.00 in the memory of their Father who was a former Wantagh Star Wrestling Champion. His trophy is on display in the case in the Hall of Champions )Brian Hooker 1987, Joe Farinella 1983, Tom Tighe 1982, Jerry Liguori 1972, Peter Defregorio 1969, Frederick Madden 1968, Ray Hanley 1966, Sal Catapano 1066, Dick Hanley 1964, Bob Murphy 1960, Peter Vencer 1956 ( 1st Long Island Champion and his trophy is on display in the case as well ) Frederick Holley ( former Coach at Wantagh HS ) and Frank Muzio Former Head Coach of the Warriors from 1992 thru 2006. Anyone who missed the event and wrestled for the team was missed. The Team honored their five seniors Doug Rogers, Alex Wedel, Chris Loew, Kyle Fogletti and Steven English. Thank you to the coaches, parents, fans, School Administration and Athletic Director Jennifer Keane for all their support this year and every year. EASTERN STATES 2012

The Wantagh Warriors wrestling team entered the 10th annul wrestling tournament at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, NY for the first time. The Tournament was hosted by Friends of Section 9 Wrestling. The tournament has grown very quickly since it’s inception to become one of the hardest events in the northeast. There were 101 different teams entered covering four different states including 12 of New York’s top Division 1 teams such as Shenendehowa # 2, Warwick Valley # 3, Longwood # 12, Webester- Schroder # 14, East-Port South Manor # 17, Brewster # 20 and Union Undicott # 20. Division two was represented by seven of the top 20 teams in this division such as Phoenix # 1 coached by former NCAA Champion Gene Mills, Greene # 5, Holley # 9, Canastota # 12, Warsaw # 15 and Peru # 19. Power house teams such as Wyoming Seminary ( ranked 8th in the USA all polls, 4 wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in the country ) coached by former assistant Scott Greene at Binghamton College, Danbury Connecticut, Hayafield, South Lakes and Westfield Virginia sent their best teams as well.
Even though the tournament was very good talent wise there were problems such as the high cost of food, admission and not enough seating. One side of the gym had bleachers while the other side did not. That meant that spectors had to walk to the other side of the facility and block the action. This tournament offered one of the best competitions we have seen but it needed a bigger location in my opinion. Another huge problem was the seeding procedure. The seeding was based on last years finish at the states, previous finish at the Eastern States or what you did at your section tournament. It did not take into consideration head to head mach ups from the current year. Another item was that not all teams were allowed to send a full team while other could. When team scores were added it was not a fair playing field. I will show you some examples as you read on. There was no place to work out to make weight for the second day.. You could not go outside because of the cold weather and snow. The gym had no place to run. That was a big problem for wrestlers trying to make weight on the second day. However, all in all it was the hardest tournament to place in. Some of the brackets were off the planet with great wrestlers. There were state champions that lost, nationally ranked wrestlers that went down and highly thought of kids that could not place.

99 lbs Jose Rodriguez 1st place and he did not surrender one point in the tournament.
120 lbs: Chris Araoz 7th place wrestled great in both losses and the seedings effected where Chris ended up in my humble opinion.
170 lbs Chris Loew 6th place He had some heart breaking losses but my

motto is: It is better to lose now than tomorrow and fight another day.
285 lbs Steven English. 5h place. Wrestled with the heart of a champion against bigger kids. There is no bigger heart than he displays.

I must say that Kyle Quinn, Vinny Turano, Danny McDevitt, James Corbett and Alex Wedel all won matches and scored points at the tournament. Several of these brave great wrestlers were one match away from placing. All the hard work does pay off perhaps not in where you placed but in your soul. This is how each and everyone should prepare for school, life and just their attitude. Second is OK but first is better.. Look to achieve and push yourself.

While some of the wrestlers were at the Eastern States they other half of the team competed at Kellenburg High School.
